More about the work
"Herodotus’ Logoi" is our second production, continuing the tradition of the "Ognian Radev" ancient theater to bring non-dramatic texts to the stage. It is a meeting point of culture and education, the ancient and the contemporary, the memory of the past and creative visions for the future.
The stories of Herodotus—9 books with musical names—are the first account of the past where characters from both the human and divine worlds come to life vividly through words. The European man narrates, names, and designates. In this way, he creates his world and builds stories.
These stories are distinct, complete, and colorful tales, and this is how they were approached in the famous seminar that inspired the current production, led by Prof. Bogdanov on Herodotus in 2012/2013 (exactly ten years ago). The focus on Greek history transitions through the Egyptian logoi, Persian logoi, Lydian logoi, and many others.
Five such vignettes were presented in their different aspects: amidst the sacred "scenography" and beneath the main dome of the former Büyükkale Mosque (now the National Archaeological Institute with Museum), with visual symbols of ancient clothing and attributes, the musical accompaniment of strings and voices, and—of course—the words of Herodotus, staged and brought to life by the team of the ancient theater.
We extend special thanks for the assistance, advice, and discussions with Prof. Petar Dimitrov, the translator of the complete edition of Herodotus’ Histories.
Our partners and friends in this endeavor are the National Archaeological Institute with Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS).
